Volunteering Has its Rewards

At the beginning of the school year I volunteered to teach the Junior Achievement lessons for Bronson's class. I figured it wouldn't be any big deal because I taught Ashby's the year before for the same grade. I guess I was more energetic and willing to help at the beginning of the year, because as the year wore on, I kept wishing I had never volunteered and wanted to get out of it. But, I decided to be a trooper and forge on. Rather than teach once a week for five weeks, Bronson's teacher wanted me to teach all five lessons in one week. I liked that much better, but it was a lot of work and time to prepare the lessons and spend time over at the school teaching. Once I am there I have a great time. One funny sideline - On my last morning I was wearing an Aeropostale t-shirt. One of the little girls said to me with wonder and amazement, "You shop at Aeropostale?" I wasn't sure whether to take that as a compliment as she thought I was cool, or maybe as an insult as she was thinking that I am too old and fat to shop at a store geared for the teeny boppers. For my self-esteem, I chose to take it as a compliment.

After my week I was glad it was over and glad I got a chance to do it because I really got to know Bronson's classmates and had a fun time. It was definitely all worth it when Monday afternoon Bronson brought home a bag full of thank-you cards from each student in his class. Here is my favorite:
